Misfit today introduced its newest wearable device, the Misfit Flare, which is a new entry-level sleep and fitness tracker that's available at an affordable $60 price point.

The Flare, like all Misfit wearables, is designed to track steps, distance, and calories burned, along with sleep quality. It can track different activities, like walking, running, yoga, soccer, basketball, and swimming. Tracking laps while swimming will require a $9.99 in-app purchase.

Simple and stylish, the Flare features an aluminum outer case mounted on a matching black band. There's a capacitive touch sensor and a single LED located underneath the face of the fitness device, which is used to track activity progress throughout the day.

A double tap on the Flare causes an LED indicator to flash. A single flash means a user is 25 percent of the way towards an activity goal, a double flash is 50 percent, and a triple flash is 75 percent. A light animation indicates the activity goal for the day has been reached.

Flare uses a replaceable watch battery that lasts up to four months, so it does not need to be charged. It is also water resistant to 50 meters, so it can be worn while swimming, bathing, and showering.

With Link compatibility, available in most Misfit wearables, the Flare can be used as a smart button to take a selfie with an iPhone, and it can control music, advance slides in a presentation, control household devices, and more.

Flare can be purchased from the Misfit website for $59.99 starting today.

I think the 50 Meter water resistance rating is positive and the replaceable battery at least allows freedom of charging. But I question what the battery costs after four months, being this is a $60.00 device.

Also, I think the flashing indicators would be somewhat confusing to remember. But for the price point, its very affordable.

If it's anything like their other products the battery inside is easily replaceable with one at the dollar store. It's just a normal watch battery, at least that's what their previous devices had.

The article didn't indicate what type of battery, thus I wasn't sure what type of battery or the overall costs.

1 flash for 25%, 2 for 50%, 3 for 75% and then unique (unidentified) animation for fully complete. I don't think that is confusing to remember at all. I mean sure, if you ask me in a few months what 2 flashes means on the misfit flare, I'll almost definitely have no clue, but that's only because I probably won't even remember the name of the device in like a week. But if I wore the thing all day every day and that is the ONLY thing that it does... Yeah I don't think it would be a challenge to understand what it means.

I don't think it would be a challenge at all based off your quote, but I think at first, it would be somewhat confusing, but like you said, you would adjust eventually. But perhaps I'm also spoiled by having an active display with the Apple Watch. And then again, I also don't care for flashes or blips of some sort on a display that requires me to remember it versus having an actual visual indicating the completion/achievement. But that's just my preference.

I owned three of these before I gave up on them. The little disc that kept track of information seemed to work fine, but the accessories like bands and clips were almost useless. They broke within weeks, if not days. Hope they have improved that.

I imagine for $60.00, this wouldn't be a piece of hardware that would last. And at least if did break, it's affordable enough to replace it, unless Misfit is reputable enough to stand behind their product, especially since had three that broke on you.

Oh, the company was OK about it. To be fair, two broke and one got lost because of the shoddy accessories (the belt clip broke while wearing it and it was just gone at the end of a workout). While they never offered me a replacement, they did offer discounts on a new one. These didn't help me at all, as I am in Canada and by the time I dealt with shipping and duty and all of that, it was less expensive to buy one at Best Buy off the shelf. It just got too frustrating. Happy to have an Apple Watch now.

25% = 1/4 the way there.

Think about a clock face, divided into 4 parts (15 minute increments)... 1/4 (25%), 1/2 (50%), and 3/4 (75%). One complete revolution of your imaginary clock is completion of the goal.

Per the site:

Charging: None

Battery: Panasonic CR1632 coin cell

Battery Life: Up to 6 months

I just wonder how well it tracks sleep

The Misfit Shine is why my wife owns an Apple Watch. After having a FitBit and a Shine die, then have Misfit refuse to ship a replacement to us because our community has the word "Resort" in the name triggered her to go ahead and get the watch. In the two months she has had the watch she wishes she had bought one earlier.

I consider low end fitness trackers like this to be disposable devices and you should plan on replacing yearly.

Eh, I got a nice analog watch for my birthday, and now that spot on my wrist is filled. I'll consider a smart watch when someone finally makes one that looks good or it becomes fashionable to wear two watches.

Strangely enough, I am seeing more and more individuals wearing a mechanical watch on one wrist and a smart watch/Apple Watch on the other wrist. And it seems to be a growing trend from what I'm reading online. I tried it, and it feels fairly awkward. But I do see more more individuals doing this. Perhaps they're tracking fitness with the Watch and what the mechanical watch for the telling the time on the other wrist.

Hmm, there we go then. Where are you seeing this?
