missing character palette symbols

Just looking around the computer tonight, and I noticed that a bunch of character palette symbols were missing. I'm sure I would have noticed this before when looking at the character palette, so I know that they are missing as opposed to never being there in the first place. Granted, they're mostly relatively obscure symbols, but still...

I could see if I were using Windows and had run some kind of system cleaning utility or had been messing around with the registry, something like that. But since I'm new to the Mac, I haven't done anything other than browse the web, rip some CDs, watch movies, edit some photos, etc.

Missing in that I believe they were that they were there before, and now they're not. I could be mistaken, though. Is that how it's supposed to be (all the blank squares)? I would love for that to be the case.
