Missing data in word and excel documents, but viewable in preview mode??

We are on Microsoft Office 14.2.2 and Mac OS 10.6.8. We are having a problem with all our Word and Excel attachments (spread sheets, invoices, etc. that are emailed to us) When we open them we can view the templates but not the data. They are basically blank documents. When we switch them to preview mode all the data becomes visible. When we try and print the document the data does not print - only the template prints. Any ideas on how to fix this problem??
