Missing Fonts

The Wingdings font is not usable from the TextEdit application in OS X 10.8 on a Mac Mini. TextEdit is in Rich Text mode and the Wingdings font is listed in the drop down font list. Selecting this font and typing results in normal text and the font selection is observed to have returned to its' previous value. Highlighting text and selecting Wingdings has no effect on the text. Any ideas?
