a simulacrum
right,i command-i my hard drive and it says that 74gig are used out of the 100.
i command-i the contents of it that the finder shows me and they sum up to 70gig, not 74.
am i missing something?
does finder not show some files?
can i change that somewhere or do i need to do the whole thing in a shell?

There might just be certain files and folders that are invisible to you.

To view all files/folders in Finder give Terminal this command: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
...or you could use something like TinkerTool to achieve the same...

Another good way to figure out where all the space went is something like OmniDiskSweeper.

And, you could try searching and/or browsing the forums a bit. This issue has been covered more than once...
