2011 MBP a1278 , running Mountain Lion 10.8.5

Keyboard and Trackpad stopped working after a regular shut down with no peripherals attached or bluetooth on.

Keyboard allows pram and smc reset and only power button works while booted- all other functions do not work while system is booted. External Usb keyboard, and bluetooth keyboard work fine. Trackpad is new , and works on a test machine without issue.

Have the latest firmware upgrades installed to current, Tried turning bluetooth off booting with no peripherals attached, restarting in safe boot, putting to sleep then waking up, repaired disk permissions a few unrelated to the problem, tried different os x on other hard drives... then fresh installed Lion 10.7 then updated, upgraded to ML 10.8.5 , deleted that then clean installed Mountain Lion -no change.I have even tried terminal command to re enable keyboard and trackpad. I have read other threads that suggest it`s a software issue but have went through all that. Why is the keyboard working at boot but not in the os x itself? Trackpad as mentioned is new and works fine in a test machine.Frustrating when there is no reason as to this problem - given external mouse and keyboard work fine..

If anyone has ideas as to what`s up, appreciate the response. TIA ...

No does not work in Lion, on all 3 os x I can reset PRAM and SMC before machine gets into the os x.. so the keyboard is at least working until booting into os x that`s the baffling part..

Does keyboard partially work in OS?
Open keyboard viewer and press some keys, see if any show up.
Maybe the keys you use at boot work but the others don't.
