RESOLVED (somewhat).
Used iBackupBot to locate the files in the backup that contained the photos then merged them with the most current backup. Unfortunately that did not solve the missing photo/thumbnail/data problem.
But what I was able to do is simply find all the photos using iBackupBot and load them into iPhoto to save them.
I then deleted them but was still able to keep the message history.
but i now have a problem where although the photo/data has been deleted the same type of missing data thumbnail remains in the place of all the photos and I cannot find where to delete them. if someone could maybe help with that I have started a new thread about it

Okay so i had an iPhone 5s and upgraded to iPhone 6.
I had used iCloud to restore from backup and not sure if that was the reason but I am missing photos from my messages app that are quite important to me as many of the best photos are ones you send through SMS.
this is what I get instead of the photo/video

I had managed to find the photos from the orig backup using "iPhone backup extractor"

Now I was wondering if I can get some help in combining the SMS attachment folder from backup "OLD" with SMS attachment folder from backup "NEW"?
my only logical thought is that since my phone recognizes the photos but just can't seem to find them if i copy paste the data that does contain the photos/vids into my most recent backup and click replace all it wouldn't be replacing new images that might be also be named IMG_1234 because IMG_1234 is there just no data for it is. Hope I'm thinking the right way and hope you guys can guide me step by step.
I have been using the phone for 4 months so have new photos/vids/messages that I don't want to lose so I can't just use the old backup that has the missing data/photos. I need to somehow combine them
