I know everyone is posting about losing photo stream but I am missing s bunch of photos from my collections section. It looks like they are there but just blank. I'm currently using an iPhone 6 but it's the same on my old iPhone 5 with iOS 8.

Any ideas how to get them back? I used recent backup from iTunes to activate/setup my 6.

I've seen this while my iCloud Photo Library is updating. Perhaps you left your wifi network mid-update and cellular usage is turned off for photos? I see you're on LTE in your screenshot.

The initial sync for iCloud Photo Library took several hours for me, presumably because my upload speed is awful.

I think I may have left WiFi when they were updating, I looked and saw the most recent pictures already on the phone so I didn't think to look at older pictures. The missing pictures seem to be from when I had my iPhone 4 (2 phones ago). The screenshot was taken days after my initial setup to display what it looks like. LTE at work as there is no WiFi.

Have you tried switching off photos in iCloud settings and then re-enabling?

It says it will delete the pictures on my phone. I'm going to back up my phone when I get home from work to iTunes and then try this.

I should have asked before, but do you have iCloud Photo Library enabled?

If you go to your Photos tab and zoom in to the Moments view, it should say at the very bottom how many photos and videos you have, along with your update status. It will either tell you it's updating or when the last update finished. You can also see this update status in Settings>iCloud>Photos, just under the toggle for iCloud Photo Library (Beta).
