Missing sent messages in Mail

Help! I have just tried to look at an old email I sent in Mail and when I click on it there is nothing there - it's blank. Seems that my recent emails that have been sent are there but not my older ones.

Do I have a setting on deleting older ones? Can anyone tell me how to look at them or are they simply not there. I have not deleted anything.
