So I just started messing around with recording videos and iMovie and I noticed I don't have any video effects like sepia and all that stuff. I read the help topic but it tells me to click the gear on my clip and choose video effect but it not there. I took screen caps for reference. Also, I have the '11 version. 9.09 to be specific.

Looks like you are trying to do it in the Events Library. You will need to bring your video into the Project Library to make it work. I have posted some screen shots to show you the difference between yours and mine.

As firedept says, you can only apply effects to video clips that are in a Project. This then leaves the original clips in the Event Library untouched.
 
That solved everything. Thanks guys. I'm a super beginner.
