I love using mission control, it's one of the best things Apple's come up with, like magsafe. And like magsafe, it appears Apple's current genius design management folk have changed mission control for the worse.

Yesterday when helping my nephew get used to his new MBAir with Sierra and teaching him about all the gestures, I noticed that when you swipe to engage Mission Control, he does not see images of the open desktops like I do when using Mavericks. He sees text only, with something like "Desktop 1," "Desktop 2," etc. (I can't remember what the actual text was). Then when you perform a secondary action and move your mouse up to the text, they expand into representations of the actual windows (which happens instantly with Mavericks, as seen below).

This youtube video gives you a quick glimpse of what I mean. Up above in the translucent area, you first see text representing the various desktops/spaces, but it takes moving the mouse up there to see visual representations of each.

I could not find any System Preferences settings to allow him to see instantly little representations of all the desktops. Is there any way to enable that, and get past the ridiculous option of requiring an additional step (mouse movement) just to see the open windows?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know of a way to turn on the "icon view" but I've noticed that if the app you swipe up from is in full screen then you immediately see the icons.

Hi - thanks, interesting to know. A shame though that you don't get that obviously-more-helpful screen view automatically instead of the cryptic text-only descriptions. Very typical of Apple after Jony Ive started messing around with the OSX to require two or more steps to do what used to take only one step. I use this feature very very often so I'm trying to figure out how to toggle things in sierra to instantly show screen representations.

Still no recommended work-arounds to get the screen view instantly for mission control, instead of the text-only view?
