Mistakenly changed library name - Applications open as if newly installed

I wrongly changed my library name from alexgarden to alex. I had a document folder right under my library that I was suppose to change to alex. Now, Firefox , thunderbird and other applications open as newly installed items. I have around 5000 and many important documents that I stupidly didn't back up and can not access now.

When it first happened, I restarted OS X but that changed nothing. The library folder went back to it original name but still all applications show as new.

Any help is much appreciated!

Sorry, I meant my user home directory (in the Mac HD folder sidebar). I clicked on get info and typed in Alex.

You should have the solution in post #3. Just a reminder, don't rename your user home directory.
