Mixing 2GB and 4GB cards

I have a mid 2010 iMac with 2x2GB modules. I would like to populate two lower slots with 2x4GB cards topping up RAM to 12GB. Can I mix memory cards with different capacity?

I have that exact same setup on my 2011 iMac. Works perfectly.
