Mixing Memory

I have a 2010 iMac that came with 4GB memory. I got 2 x 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 1333MHz Corsair memory modules. Installed them but the system was unstable. Even reseated them with no change. Will return for exchange. My question can I keep the 2x2GB and add the new sticks giving me 20GB or stay with 16GB
