My goal is to get the most out of the iphone's beautiful retina display by converting some of my 720p mkvs to a format which is recognized by itunes and my iphone 4.

I tested Handbrake and it took forever! Almost 3 hours to convert 1 mkv movie. To top it off the quality was not that great (but i'm sure my quality settings weren't very precise either).

Next I used, as recommended, MKV2VOB. The conversion to .mpg took just 15 minutes. It produced a perfectly working 4.3GB mpg movie. When I tried to load this movie into iTunes i got an "itunes has stopped working" crash.

what am i missing here?
