mkv 720p files streamed from external hard drive or NAS?

hello people

can anyone tell me once hacked can the apple tv stream 720p mkv files easily from an external hard drive via usb or a network attached storage device?

Thinking of buying one very soon and using apple flash tv to put on xbmc (if possible) then streaming 720p content from NAS is this possible? does it work well?

I stream 720p movies to my ATV from an external HD hooked up to my MacBook Pro via FireWire 800. They're m4v files though.
