Hi All,

I've been running .mkv files quite happily since I started with a mac in Tiger and suddenly, I am no longer able to open these files in any major player while running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. So far I have tried updating the following programs.

VLC -> crashes trying to open them, have 1.3 installed. Had heard that they are losing developers for Mac version so future support is looking dodgy. VLC should have support as that was the app I was using beforehand, but no luck now. I have also tried a fresh install and deleted prefs with no success.

Perian + QT -> No luck, am running Perian 1.2 and files are just not recognized in Quicktime.

DivX -> Unsupported.

Is there anything else I can try? I would rather not downgrade VLC as the .ogg support I need is awful in previous versions.

Many thanks!

Yup, have trashed preferences using that script in the .dmg, then restarted, logged out and to no avail. I know these files work because they have run in VLC previously.

Haha!!
Ok I manually trashed EVERYTHING and reinstalled, then shut down, made a cup of tea and then rebooted.

With a cup of monkey tea and a little patience, .mkv files will load but VLC seems to have a good 10-15 sec think about it from when you double click the file to when it starts playback.

Thanks for your support guys!

VLC is not considered the prime candidate (a date full of candy?) when it comes to playing back (and seeking through) .mkv files.

Movist does a better job at this.

I actually use VLC and Movist for whatever file I come along.

Movist? Ok, I'll have a quick look around for it on your recommendation then.

[EDIT] OMG OMG OMG

Ok, so a quick download and trial later and it runs EVERYTHING I throw at it, quickly and with excellent subtitle support (the very thing I use .mkv files for).

Hi5 Spinnerlys, great sugggestion!
