When finding blue-ray "sources" its acceptable to say ..."look for .MKV files as these are from the disc directly"

However, how can that always be true, since .MKV is only a container.. The actual video inside can be anything. Is this the only reason for also looking at bit-rate, file size etc as well, or is it more probable because the video is in MKV container its 'more likely' to be "source" material?
