.mkv revisited

Alright, I gave up trying to convert .MKV files with Visual Hub. I put all my movies in the Movies section so front row can see them, them I opened the .mkv HD movie in Quicktime. I saved the .MKV files as reference movie. I dragged that reference movie into my itunes window for movies, added artwork etc. Works great. Am I doing something wrong?:confused:
 
.MKV Files

It is very simple to play and convert/burn .MKV files on your MAC. Just download the Pref.Plane codec pack for QT at http://perian.org and install. QT will now load and play MKV files. To convert to .MOV just load the movie and select 'save as' to save in MOV format. If 'save as' is grayed out just click to close the movie and you will be asked to save your changes, select yes and a destination and your movie will be saved as a QT movie. This is simple and clean as the movie can then be burned with iDVD (one step from file). No other software needed. Hope this helped.
 
I really enjoy using Quicktime to play other files than .mov files. What I do miss though, is switching audio streams when watching .mkv files. But maybe .mov files will implement more than one audio stream in their files too at some point down the road, and then there would obviously have to be an option to switch too ;)
 
yeah, i have some hd mkv, will play with vlc, will do video only in quicktime, no luck with visual hub, ffmpag splits off audio and framerate looks bad whatever i choose. all i want is it in h264.
 
I am using VisualHub to convert my HD mkv files all the time. I seldom have any problems. The resulting files do play well on my AppleTV and there is no framerate loss. The settings I use in VisualHub are:
  • AppleTV Profile - High
  • Custom Bitrate: 3350
 
I have MKV files playing in Front Row in Leopard on my MacBook Pro but Front Row never seems to play files as well as VLC. If only there was a way to have front row just open a movies in VLC. Then my media problems would be solved.

I have also used this method and the files do look great. But unfortunately you loose the audio (DD5.1 or DTS). Yes my reciever will output in Dobly Pro-Logic II, simulated surroud, but this is nowhere near DD/DTS. This is a tradeoff. I personally feet that Audio is just as important as video, especially in the action movies. With .mkv giving great video, and the ability to have good audio (unless converted for appletv). therefore I chose not to use my appletv as much as I would have liked to, due to the audio issues. Hopefully apple will fix this issue. I know the appletv can be hacked to allow 5.1 playback, but i dont want to go through that. I have switched to using DVICO TViX. No the inteface is not as good as Apple and it is not wireless, BUT the audio and video playback are outstanding, and watching HiDef .mkv well makes up for those deficiences. Hopefully Apple will open up AppleTV if they do not plan on developing it any further. I feel as though they left us early adapters out in the cold with this product. If they would open it up, then it would make a great product.

Most .mkv HD encodes use the x264 codec. Instead of re-encoding the whole video you could just download Perian. Then open the video in Quicktime and Export and in the video settings select Pass Through. You could do it with most video encoders. You could also try FFMpegX or whatever you use. Just make sure to "Pass Through" all it basically does is change the container for the video.

This is what I do and it works great. I don't have apple TV so must burn the movie to DVD, I get the 5.1 and great (not HD) video quality. But as my HDDVD player up converts to 1080i it is close. I just have a problem with the time it takes to encode the movie file for burning. Anyone know of a stand alone encoder that will do it faster than iDVD or QT?? I tried DVD pro 4 but it was the same as iDVD, 5 hours.

I will try again. Maybe you can help me
 
I think it is Acc-lc 6ch (or is it ac3 )that perian, visualhub etc have a problem with. can anyone confirm this? i have extracted the audio and video manually but when remuxing it comes out of sync.

Using Perian and saving to .Mov in QT works great. The only problem is iDVD crashes every time I select the .Mov for "OneStep from Movie...". Anyone else have this happen?
 
Howdy Folks:

happy New Year:

I downloaded the Perian software - converted the mkv. file and was able to play - BUT - does not save file , as was suggested when I closed Quicktime

So any other suggestions on how to rip an mkv with Toast 7 Titanium
I am g4 PB 1.6 Tiger 10.4.12 or G5 iMac 1.8 Tiger 10.4.12
