It doesn't have to be exactly to MP4 I am just trying to convert my MKV files that I created when I placed my DVD's on my macbook. I didn't realize they would make the movies 11gb's when I can convert to mp4 or m4v or avi at like 2-4gb. I normally use Handbrake, RipIt or DVDRemaster but none are having any success converting the MKV file. Any suggestions or ideas to make this work? Thanks

,mkv files can be 1 to 11 GB if you choose the right preset i Hndbrake, no need to re-encode them to another container (.mkv and .mo4 are just containers/formats) using the same codec.

Though you can try Handbrake to transcode the .mkv files to whatever container you like using a tighter compression using the H264 codec.

Outside of just clicking buttons I don't know much more for video converting / re-encoding. What's the method to choose another container using the same codec in Handbrake?

You just could click the Regular > High Profile preset and under Output Settings > Format select the MP4 file format, even if already shown, the container will be changed from .m4v to .mp4, as .m4v is the container for the High Profile preset.

I just transcoded an .mkv with 70 seconds length to an .mp4 in 6 minutes (4.69 frames per second) and got a 24MB file out of a 43MB one.

As you can see from the VideoSpec reports I managed to cut the bitrate from 5,095 Kb/s (Kbps) to 2,864 KB/s,

Is there anyone use paying software? I tried one, it works good, but I'm not sure if I should pay for it, what's the difference between free and pay?

No need to do so, especially as many paid software titles in the video transcoding business are just SPAM titles with less to offer than the free titles.

As I haven't used paid software to transcode my videos (work and home), I don't have experience with paid software, as Handbrake, VideoMonkey and MPEG Streamclip fulfil my transcoding needs.
