iMovie doesn't load my .mkv movie file and I tried avidemux for Mac, but whenever I open it up, it freezes. I left it on overnight just to see if it was taking long, but it's still frozen in the morning (my Macbook Pro is from 2010). I tried converted the file with Handbrake, but the quality loss is noticeable after conversion and I'd like to keep the exact original quality. Is there any video editor I can buy that will allow me to?

MPEG Streamclip doesn't list MKV as a supported format. But you could first remux it using MP4 Tools and then re-encode in Streamclip, I imagine.

Actually, the the latest beta version of MPEG Streamclip worked quite well. However, it didn't retain the subtitles...how do I make the subtitles stick? (I trimmed the video, so I also need the subtitles to be trimmed to match the timing as the original video, except trimmed to the part when I trimmed to the video)
