I have a WD Protable USB only external HD that was supposed to be for our MB Air but since my DVD collection has outgrown the 320gb HD in my Mini it has been repurposed as an iTunes media drive connected to the Mini.

The only thing it does it store my entire iTunes folder and is about halfway full. I have no speed issues with this drive. I use Home Sharing and there is absolutely no buffering at all once the movie starts. I watched Ironman 2 again the other night on the MB Air in HD and it did fantastic. So I don't know how much faster a FireWire connection would be in relation to the size of these drives, but for me this little usb powered drive is doing pretty good.

the usage for this drive will be to get things on and off quickly. The data rate of HD video isnt that high either. so im wondering if usb already maxes out the speed of such a disc, or if FW800 is really faster.
