Hi guys!

Today I returned from my bachelor-trip with my boys from Istanbul and wanted to share something I underestimated I think while trying to reduce mobile data abroad. Let me tell you real quick what I'm using, in case you want to contribute to the discussion:

iPhone X
iOS 12, Public Beta - 16A5308e
affected App: WhatsApp

Alright, so I was to lazy to buy a Turkish SIM-card (the costs are not the problem here) and bought a 1GB-package for 30 days, with which I was really confident because I wanted to focus on taking pictures, having a good time and just share some stuff when using mobile data.

So at a certain point (flight mode on, of course) I received a notification-SMS that I used 512 MB - which was very surprising. I continued to use flight mode and disabled mobile data for all apps except WhatsApp and Safari. After half an hour in the taxi, where I fell asleep, I got the second SMS that I'm at 256 MB. I panicked a little and started to investigate and I think I found the solution: Stories & profile pictures-shenanigans.

Every time I enable Flight Mode WhatsApp connects to the servers and loads all random stuff I don't really need like the Stories and of course checks if all profile pictures are up to date. Depending on the people you have in your network, it can load a huge amount of data and eat up all the MB. In the end it didn't really matter because more and more WiFi-spots started to pop up so I could enjoy the trip a little better.

What about you? Do you have any unnecessary data-hogs that need to be treated carefully?

Cheers :)
