Is Mobile ME required for all of the push notifications that will be incorporated into 3.0? I don't have an account and would rather not, but I would like to take advantage of push notifications for IM services, facebook, etc.

No. MobileMe is not the "cloud" for all push notifications. Apple has a separate server for that. So to answer your question, No MobileMe accounts are not necessary for Push Notifications.

From what others have said, the option only shows up on 3.0 if the app supports it. So far nothing has been released that does.

As of right now, Gmail push is not working with my 3.0. Something I was hoping for so I can get rid of my yahoo mail account for the push notification.

Gmail push has nothing to do with push notifications really.

OP was talking about the Push Notification Server and apps using it.

Mail.app is an Apple application, so it doesn't need the push notification service.

It needs Google to support pushing to the phone. :D
