MobileMe and Gmail custom labels

There's been discussion about the fact that custom labels between MobileMe and Google mail are incompatible. However, if you export/import via vCards, it appears those labels translate correctly. Even birthdays get copied. The only thing is that pictures don't get copied. And of course, groups aren't the same.

Is there a better solution?
