Hi Guys,

I purchased a mobile me subscription back in August last year. I mainly brought it for the syncing between my Iphone3g / macbook and mobile me.

I also use my me.com email as my only email address. Now, i've sold my iphone so dont need the sync capability between my devices.

I dont need the Idisk space either.

When I need to renew my seuscription is there an email only option which is cheaper than the £60 a year??

I've looked into gmail, yahoo etc but all the good emails are gone. I basically want myname or my.name @domain.com not interested in my.name4564@domain.com

No. Mobile Me is all or nothing, you do not get to choose your services.

Have you tried adding your middle initial to the mix? or lastnamefirstname or something a little less obvious? Surely there's a way to get your name in there without a string of meaningless numbers afterward...

Also, Gmail doesn't recognize the difference between name.name@gmail.com and namename@gmail.com, so adding the dot isn't going to help your search.

I dont have a middle name :(

I've tried all combinations i can think of.

The only thing that has com close is mail.initialname - not perfect but the best i could secure.

If its about cost then if you check on ebay now or nearer the time your sub ends you might find a cheap deal.

I have a family pack which is £89pa from Apple but i got a renewal pack for £40 on ebay - a Sealed Apple pack, albeit in old .Mac packaging. I brought two packs so got 2 years for under the price one. I think a single user renewal was going for £25 i think so big saving.

Since you're on MobileMe why change? You'll always have that disk space available, aliases, your bookmarks & address book in the cloud & web. And Apple should improve the service over time and you might move back to an iphone etc.

I dont see myself moving from MobileMe. Its such a nice no brainer having everything ready and built into one price & process. No need setup up individual services etc. Its not perfect but iDisk is great for off-site encrypted backups - this space alone is invaluable - but i use all bits of the service. The only thing is that i spent $25 on ForkLift application which makes using iDisk really easy - brilliant app. Using iDisk via finder or web is not good enough - yet. Anyway....

I just looked on ebay and there is a £35 deal but you'd have to ask what is being sold as it doesnt look like the retail pack.

Have you thought about buying your own domain name? that way you should be able to get the address that you want. I have done this and then use it through gmail apps. The interface is just like gmail and it is free.:) The cost of a domain name is usually around $10 a year depending on what you get.

Thanks Macgrl & Broadcastdoc.

I've now registered a domain and use the standard google apps version (which is free) so all in all i'm getting my email served to me through google for around £7 a year which is the cost of my domain name.

With the saving i'm making over the mobileme account i'm going to purchase a Dropbox subscription when i'm due for renewal.

Cheers

No problem at all, and the good thing about the google apps is that you can use the calendar they provide too.:)
