Is see VESA have approved a new standard called Mobility DisplayPort. It sounds ideal as a iPhone dock connector replacement (assuming Apple do change it as rumoured).
It uses the micro-USB connector, so good for powering the device and is small enough.
Video output is possible to HDMI or DisplayPort, so you could show your images and video on a TV or many Macs and monitors.
And if it has the bandwidth to output DisplayPort video, it should be fast for data.
