I have a Mobius 5-Bay RAID enclosure arriving on Friday and and trying to decide which is the better way go in setting it up.
Is hardware or software RAID the best way to go and why? Which is faster?
With using the onboard hardware RAID the setup is easier, and I know I can easily move the drive between computers if I want to. Even if they are different operating systems like Linux, Windows, OS X.
But what about software RAID using the Disk Utility on my iMac and having the 5-bay enclosure set up as a JBOD? I'm assuming the drive wouldn't work on a different operating system. But what about on other OS X computers? If I unplugged the drive and went over to a friends house and connected it to his machine (iMac running OS X 10.10.2), would it work right off?
