I installed the software for a 3G dongle. It added a modem icon in the menu bar (see attached image).

This icon is present all the time, even when the dongle is not connected.

Anyone know how to hide this icon so that it only shows when the dongle is connected?

Did you try clicking or Option-clicking the icon to see if there are settings that permit that?
 
Clicking just brings up the sub-menu (as attached) - and network preferences offers no option to remove it as far as I can see.

Option clicking does nothing.
