Just reading up on the differing modems within the iPhone 7's & wondering if this will continue with the X.

One article suspects the X may just have the Qualcomm models, resulting in faster top end speeds...

It's impossible to know until we see the first teardowns of the iPhone X, but here's my suspicion. Apple is currently trying to diversify its modem suppliers, using Qualcomm modems in some of its iPhone 7's and Intel modems in others. This is probably also the case for the iPhone 8, but, most likely, only one of those suppliers gets to be in the iPhone X (my guess: Qualcomm).

This could have a nice upside for consumers. Partly because of a messy legal war between Apple and Qualcomm, Apple throttles the performance of its Qualcomm modems so they have parity with the slower Intel modems, and all iPhone 7 owners get the same performance. But if the iPhone X has only Qualcomm modems, that could mean no throttling and faster modem performance for Apple's top-of-the-line iPhone.

I'm hoping a compromise isn't made with the X by having the supposedly slower Intel modems used, especially for the price we're being asked to pay.

Qualcomm me!

They will split them depending on the carrier you get I think. Even tho some will have the Qualcomm modems the networks aren’t ready for GBLTE so it won’t matter anyways..Next year is when GBLTE should be rolled out to many more places so I bet they put them in next years phones..

Don't need to hope or guess.

The iOS 11 GM leak confirmed the use of Intel and Qualcomm modems in the iPhone X. The spec page for the iPhone X also lists two models: A1865 and A1901.

From a logical standpoint, Apple wants to groom Intel to become a Qualcomm competitor so dual sourcing is possible.
