Apparently, the MacBook Air's superdrive does not require a high speed USB port. Instead, Apple put in some type of hardware to prevent it from being used on computers other than the MBA. By doing some soldering and installing a new USB-IDE bridge (a $9 part), the drive can be used with any USB 2.0 Mac or PC.
