If I install the Mojave beta, will it be possible to switch to the release copy when it comes out without having to re-install the OS? I want to try it out but don't want to commit to beta releases forever.

You can do that with minor betas, but usually with major betas Apple forces you to install the GM version after the beta phase ended. In other words, sometimes Apple did not permit you to upgrade from the last beta to the GM.

Thanks! This is what I suspected - I'm just an end-user; so I can hold out another few months for dynamic backgrounds and dark mode if the alternative is complete backup and re-installation of all my crap

Apple makes no guarantees that you'll be able to upgrade; in most cases you'll be able download the full installer and use that to upgrade from beta without having to reinstall everything, but there can be cases where that's not the case. Regardless, if you're using beta software, you should be prepared to reinstall anyway.

slightly off topic, i've installed mojave beta but after a couple of days i have to say that i really don't like it.
seems a bit flaky to me though metal2 does clarify movies.
(ok, i understand it's not the GM)
have wiped and returned to high sierra.
think i may well skip mojave and wait to see how 10.15 functions.
