i recently upgraded my 5,1 macpro with rx580 video from Sierra to high Sierra and then Mojave, performing all firmware upgrades along the way. It has been working fine for a week.

Last night I tried to create an additional secondary APFS volume to install a CLEAN version of Mojave as an alternate test boot volume, and now I get nothing but black screen.

I have tried going to recovery mode but only get black screen.

In order to attempt the clean install, I created a new APFS volume in disk Utility, then i downloaded Mojave installer from App Store and ran it. I specified the new volume as the destination. It installed some stuff and requested restart. I clicked ok and it restarted. Nothing but black screen after that. I left it overnight. Still black screen in the morning. I have tried to shut it off and start in recovery mode but it never comes up to recovery mode just black screen.

So I can’t get back to boot from original APFS volume that I upgraded to last week and has been working fine, can’t seem to complete install in new volume and I’m dead in the water, not sure what to do.

I do have the originally working volume backed up via CCC but I can’t even get to recovery mode now I’m not sure what to do.

Any ideas?
