New MBP is asking me to upgrade from Majave to Catalina.

If you have 32 bit apps you depend on, than no Catalina for you.

Also, you might want to check the threads on Catalina bugs and see if there are any showstoppers for you.

I have been running Catalina since release day with no issues.

BTW, by new MBP are you talking about a 16" MBP?

He can't be as that is already on Catalina, unless it is just the supplemental update to 10.5.1 he is seeing.

Do you know if it is possible to install (with a clean installation) Mojave on the new MacBook Pro 16"?

I haven't heard that anyone has tried it, but 99.9999% certain you cannot. It almost certainly won't have the required driver support for the new hardware.

Someone might work out a hack of some kind, but I haven't seen anything.

When I had a 2015 MBP I didn’t want to update to Catalina on it. This got rid of the constant update to Catalina reminders as well as the notification on the dock. Run:

sudo softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Catalina"

If you need Mojave, running a VM would be your best bet. You can't install an older version of macOS than the Mac originally shipped with.*

*...I'm sure I read of someone who did install Snow Leopard on a Mac that shipped with Lion, but it required essentially treating the Mac as a Hackintosh and never really worked properly as the drivers aren't easily available (don't quote me on this story!). No idea if that's even technically possible nowadays with things like the T2 chip etc.

Just upgrade to Catalina. That’ll get rid of it.

Oh, that's not so good for me, but I immagine I will have to get used to it. I still need a couple of 32-bit applications and I though that installing Mojave from an USB drive would have solve the problem...but not. Apparently is not possible. Thank you anyway!

There is a really simple way to remove the red dot without sudo terminal commands.

Simply remove system preferences from the dock. Go to your applications folder and make a shortcut to the system preferences app, add shortcut to toolbar. No more red dot (but you get an arrow):

I'd stick with Mojave for now. It's stable and mature.
Catalina is too much "a work in progress", still too many complaints.

What to do about "that red dot"?
IGNORE it.
That's what I do.

The genius at the Apple Store told me it was possible to downgrade the MacBook 16 from Catalania to Mojave ... ? I'm doubful...has anybody try it ?

Honestly, I wouldn't do it.

Regardless of how you feel about Catalina, almost all of Apple's reliability control and quality testing is aimed at running the machine on Catalina. There are probably some software/hardware hooks which Mojave doesn't have.

If the GPU doesn't have drivers in Mojave you will probably run into issues.

It is also what I think, new hardware always requires new software...in that case Catalina...So the genius was misleading me...It is also what I think, new hardware always requires new software...in that case Catalina...So the genius was misleading me...

I removed settings icon from the dock so I don't have to see that Dot.

I would keep waiting and let them continue to iron out Catalina issues.
Excellent advice! That is exactly what I am doing, although I am somewhat "forced" to do it. That's because two on my critical third party applications, SuperDuper! and TechTool Pro, do not yet have Catalina-compatible updates/versions ready. SuperDuper! is close, but I suspect it will be a few weeks until one for TechTool Pro is ready. In the meantime, OS 10.15.2 is currently in its third beta:

https://www.macrumors.com/2019/11/20/apple-seeds-macos-catalina-10-15-2-beta-3/

I'm willing to bet not all issues will be resolved with OS 10.15.2 once it is released.

In any event, besides the issue of 32-bit apps, one needs to insure that all third party apps one uses are fully compatible with Catalina.
