I’m looking at getting an external monitor for a M1 MacBook Air that would be used for office work/bookkeeping (nothing too crazy). I’m trying to decide between an ultra-wide or dual display using display link.

For the ultra-wide, I’m thinking about an LG 34 inch with 3440x1440 resolution. However, I’ve read some places that say the 3440x1440 would have very poor text rendering on a 34 inch display with the macOS and scaling. Is this the case?… I don’t really understand how macOS handles that.

I’m also thinking about going with a dual monitor setup using a Pluggable display link. Does anybody have experience with these and are they pretty reliable? My concern with this is that I don’t want to be messing with slow responding or glitchy screens. However, this may be the cheaper option, as the super high def ultra-wides get crazy expensive.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't have DisplayLink, and I run a 21.5-inch "regular" monitor - not Ultra-Wide. However, to avoid possible glitches, I'd recommend getting an Ultra-Wide.

3440 x 1440 is the Ultra-Wide version of 1440p (2560 x 1440), which provides plenty of screen real estate.
