So the problem is that I can turn the computer on (in the sense that I hear the startup sound, and the little light on the cover release button lights up) but that's all that I get. I looked on the mac website and they told me how to reset my parameter RAM, which I tried....but there is still no effect.

I had the same problem with my macbook pro around the same time one year ago. The last time this happened I finally just kept frantically pressing the power button and magically the monitor showed up.

Anyone else experience this?

Nope, the display is just black. I don't think the laptop is responding to anything except the power button.
