I never understood why people liked light bars. Why not just turn the lights on in the room or get a nice lamp that won't end up in the trash in a few years.

I bought the Benq Screenbar four years ago and have been very happy with it. I love the ability to adjust color temperature as well as brightness. I used it on a 27" iMac for a while, but it now sits on top of an external monitor. There are cheaper brands out there, but the Benq is very sturdy, works very well, and comes from a trusted industry name, so that's the one I went with.

Because:
  1. Many, many people absolutely hate overhead lighting.
  2. Overhead lighting almost always has a color hue to it and many people want pure white lighting.
  3. There's no need to light up an entire room, an entire corner of a room, or even an entire desk. These light bars focus the light to the area just below the monitor where it is needed and little else.
  4. These light bars ARE just table lamps, they just don't take up space on a table. They use the same LED bulbs as most LED-based table lamps and instead of needing a power outlet, they use your computer for power.
  5. These light bars don't give off a glare on the screen the way any overhead light or table lamp absolutely will, simply because of the way they are positioned.
  6. Different people like different things.
