Monitor Managing in OS X

I wanted to know if there were any outside programs or anything that anyone else uses for monitor managing in OS X. I have a MBP1,1 and I hate how I have to have the MBP closed and plug in keyboards/any-USB-device for my MBP to work with an external monitor while having the 15" display off. After I installed Windows Vista, I was surprised by how simple and easy it's monitor managing system worked. I could manually turn off the laptop monitor so easily without having to put the MBP to sleep.

I guess there aren't any. Apple needs to fix this issue. It's freakin annoying.
