Monitor minus signs

I have a 2006 eMac - 10.4.8
My CRT developes little dashes (minus signs) on the screen. There are about 1/8" long and disappear when a new image is projected.

Does anyone have an idea what is causing this? Thanks
 
Are they dependent to certain colours? If it disappears when a new image is loaded then I doubt it would be dead pixels.
