Monitor Troubles

I just bought a HP w2207h monitor, 22 inches. The suggested resolution is 1680x1050, but when I set it to that in display preferences, the screen just "shrinks" so there are black borders on the sides. Now I am using 1280x800, which fills up my screen, but is the same resolution as my laptop, so everything is just huge. How can I increase the resolution, but still fill up the whole screen?

Right now I am hooked up by VGA. There is also an HDMI port on the monitor. Would switching to HDMI make a difference?
