Monitors : is 300 cd/m2 enough brightness?

I have been looking for a 4K monitor but all of the good IPS ones are 300 cd/m2 . Is this enough brightness? I use my monitor in a fairly bright area and I checked and apples thunderbolt display is 400 cd/m2 which makes me wonder if 300 cd/m2 is a bit dim.
