My M1 MacMini semi-crashes every couple hours on Monterey 12.3.1. It's strange, some things work, some don't.
Finder seems to work, but I can't copy / paste or drag. Mounting of DMGs works normally (but can't drag apps).
Quicklook won't show anything -- infinite loading for any file type (jpg, pdf, etc).
The App Store app opens a completely blank window.
Messages will endless beachball, and won't even force quit properly.

When this happens, ram usage seems normal. No crazy memory guzzling. Activity Monitor seems to work normally.
I try relaunching Finder, but that doesn't fix anything. Only a reboot works.

Any ideas?

That's not normal, of course. I'm not a tech-savvy, so my first procedure would be to reinstall OS from "recovery"; it's not traumatic at all, as all your "data" volume is preserved. This would fix a possible (?) corrupt OS install.
...Well, and all the typical operations (reset SMC... etc) that Apple tech support would ask you to do before considering it a bug or a physical failure.
To make a complete report with "EtreCheck" would be useful too.

(Just my suggestion... I never have experienced a problem like yours).

Create a new user and restart your machine, logging in only as the new user as an easy troubleshooting step.

I chose to format and reinstall. This seems to have solved the problem. I've not seen a MacOS install go corrupt ever before.

Now on 12.4 it's happening again. It seems to be a quicklook / finder crash which then spreads to other apps and makes them misbehave, not quit, not load.

Nobody else has experienced this?

No. But I would now take up StudioMac’s suggestion and create a new user account and check if it starts happening again. Try running Etrecheck before you do that.

I'm having similar issues on my 16" M1 Pro but not on my 14" M1 Pro for some reason. The 16" is my company machine, so I don't have any control over how it was imaged/formatted, but it seems like Spaces crashes every couple of hours and I either have to give it a few minutes to sort itself out or reboot. I'm a heavy user of Spaces so this is annoying when it happens.

Oddly enough, my 14" MBP, which I migrated over from my M1 MBA with Time Machine, hasn't had one single hiccup. No crashes, no freezes, no compatibility problems, nothing. And I usually never even shut it fully down. I guess it's good that it's not my personal Mac that's doing it, but it's super annoying during the work day when I'm trying to get things done. Reboot only seems to fix it temporarily, and it only seems to happen after a wake from sleep.

It sounds like you added software or hardware between May 9th and today that is causing the problem.

Originally my 12.3.1 was a "dirty" install, having upgraded from OS 11 and thru each release of 12. But then on May 8, I formatted and installed a clean 12.3.1 which stopped the problem. The only thing that's changed now is that I upgraded to 12.4 which restarted the problem.

This "disease" is back, so I ran an Etrecheck report. Could this report pinpoint the culprit?

You make it sound like you didn't install third party software.

Oh sorry, to clarify, when I clean installed 12.3.1, I installed a few things like Boom, Protonmail bridge, 1 password, and an Areca RAID driver for M1. All this worked fine with no crashes for a month. When I installed 12.4, nothing else was done or added. Then the crashes resumed.

It could be one of the third party applications that you have installed which is incompatible with 12.4. My suggestion is to uninstall all your third party apps. Then add each one in one at a time and see which app might be causing the issue. Also, you can open the Console application and look for any crash logs.

Thanks for the suggestion. The Console reports multiple crashes only from mds

Code:

Uninstall all of the 3rd party applications to get a baseline sanity, followed by restarting your computer. I would leave the computer without any 3rd party applications and see if the crashes stop. Then add in one of the 3rd party applications after a day or two. And do that until you encounter the crashes. Hopefully, that will give you an idea of what is causing the crashes to happen.

It's so hard to pinpoint. It almost seems time-based. I've uninstalled the software I had running. Boom, 1 password, Protonmail bridge and had absolutely no software starting up or running after a fresh reboot. Things are fine for about an hour. If I step away and come back, Finder no longer works and I must reboot.

According to Activity Monitor:

QuickLookUIService (Finder) (Not Responding)

Is there a way to find all QuickLook extensions that might be inside .apps? Even if there is no software running, QuickLook still loads components from apps right?

There's still a lot of randomness to the quicklook/Finder crash. But one thing that makes it happen for sure is trying to play a video with IINA or Infuse. Does this provide any hints?

I have almost convinced myself that all ports on the Ultra Studio are "rebooting" regularly. Most noticeably, I have hardwired ethernet that seems to regularly "reboot" as if the connection crashes and needs up to a minute or two to reboot and reconnect.

I'm using the same "everything" that showed no such problem on former Macs running macOS BEFORE Monterey... and just in case this is a coincidental "cable gone bad" or similar, I have already tried pulling the cable OUT of Ultra and into older Intel Macs when this happens and this issue does not repeat on them. Thus, I'm confident it is NOT cable and NOT router/modem.

I'll sum it up like this: For most spans of time, all works as expected. However, periodically, there is a up to few minutes delay in terms of loading a webpage or email send/receive. The rest of the system seems fine but it is as if the Internet is down. Checking status of Internet shows router and modem with stable internet.

Of course, I've gone the route of suspecting the Internet is temporarily down in spite of "all fine" icons so I can shift blame away from Ultra, but:
  • Pulling the ethernet cord and plugging it into my Intel MBpro when this happens and then trying to load the same website or check email, all is fine again. OR,
  • Quickly turning on wifi on Ultra and disconnecting the ethernet cable and that web page will immediately load via wifi (thus Internet is not temporarily down).
I notice the same with the USB/Thunderbolt ports... like they "crash" and "reboot" from time to time. I suspect that whatever controls ALL of the external ports has a/some bug(s) that is maybe "sleeping" the ports if not outright leading to some kind of "reboot" cycle for them. Even with mighty Ultra, spinning beach ball shows itself when this is happening... which is not consistent but it feels like it's a time-based trigger.

Right after the 12.4 upgrade, I suddenly had something that worked before- Airplay from Music app to Sonos- not working anymore (only with Sonos speakers, but would still work with other Airplay options). If I chose the Sonos speakers in Music, the screen would freeze, go black, then pink and Studio Ultra would completely reboot. After much trial & error, the last thing I tried was unhooking ethernet and turning on wifi. Magically, Airplay to Sonos worked again. Plugged ethernet back in and turned off wifi. Airplay to Sonos worked again.

And then there's the "unexpectedly eject"ions of USB devices... which is not a problem with all devices but only some... with no way for a consumer to know if any given device will remain attached or not other than simply trying it. In short, the U is USB does not seem to apply to current Silicon Macs and/or Macs running Monterey (I've seen a bit of this one associated with user comments about Intel Macs upgraded(?) to Monterey too). Basically, some USB stuff is universal and "just works" and some USB stuff is not universal and will not remain attached. Hook the same stuff that will not remain attached to an Intel Mac running macOS before Monterey (and maybe Big Sur too) with the same cable and the U generally means what the U means again.

It's not some kind of missing driver because- in general- anything USB WILL attach and will work for at least a while. Some just won't remain attached after some period of time... like someone pulling the cord without a manual ejection.

I've trialed & errored the crap out of these issues through multiple cables, to multiple jacks, through multiple hubs (powered & unpowered) and I come back to perceiving either Monterey (and maybe Big Sur) has some reboot/sleep bugs OR worse, there is some tangible issues with Silicon itself, as I can't replicate ANY of these issues when doing the same or hooking the same stuff to several Intel Macs using the same cables, etc.

And then there's the "not full speed" issue which is objectively summarized here.

Now I realize none of this ties directly to the Quicklook suspicion OP is sharing... but I chime this in to imply there ARE bugs in Monterey that need to be fixed and some of those can show themselves via Finder (when trying to work with external drives for example) as well as the same sense of maybe time-driven, partial system reboots while the rest seems to be working fine. Maybe there is some kind of link between the two/three/five/X?

Hopefully between now and macOS Ventura, Apple invests intense effort on optimizing core functionality to work these issues OUT of macOS. Personally, I was hoping for a Snow Monterey announcement with exactly this in mind.

I have the same problem. Every few hours most apps just stop working properly but also don't really crash. Only thing that helps for me usually is a hard reboot. Pretty annoying. On top sometimes when MBP was in sleep it just restarted.

I'll sum it up like this: For most spans of time, all works as expected. However, periodically, there is a up to few minutes delay in terms of loading a webpage or email send/receive. You've described it so well. I also have the ethernet function crash whatever that actually means. And the most noticeable bug is that quicklook (and hence Finder) crashes every time an external drive is accessed. Interestingly force quitting or relaunching doesn't fix it. Only a reboot.

Yes, I don't know what's going on. Chasing this rabbit leads to seemingly an endless group of "solutions" that soon become "no, that actually did not work." Apple fans will try to point at everything else or proclaim that "everything works perfectly fine on "my" system." More objective people will eventually throw their hands up.

I've really pounded through all such options and have reached the point of being pretty confident that either Silicon or Big Sur-Monterey has meaningful bugs related to ports. I hope it's the latter because that can get fixed in some future upgrade. I miss "just works" Apple. I miss the U in USB meaning what it is supposed to mean.

I'm generally pretty happy with the new Studio but these low-level, almost take-for-granted things like ethernet, USB, etc seem especially frustrating. I would think the Mac code to manage stuff like commonplace jacks would be refined down to near perfection after all these years. However, give that too much thought and you start wondering about the Silicon hardware itself so I try to redirect my own hypothesizing back to something that CAN be fixed... and keep hoping that the NEXT dot upgrade might bring tangible solutions.

I think I've figured it out. It is an SMB issue. It only happens when accessing network shares.

I found this explanation from Carbon Copy Cloner's website:

Apple's SMB filesystem client causes system stalls, random application crashes, and may lead to kernel panics

Update (macOS 12.3): This issue appears to be effectively resolved in macOS 12.3.

We have received several reports from Apple Silicon Mac users of unruly macOS behavior that occurs while copying files to an SMB-mounted NAS volume. The behavior includes the following:

  • Random application crashes
  • Prompts to grant various macOS system services access to the login keychain (i.e. because the service that retains the unlocked keychain reference crashed, thus locking the keychain)
  • Laggy mouse behavior
  • System stalls that eventually end with a reboot and kernel panic report
We were able to reproduce this behavior using a simple shell script that creates files and folders on SMB-mounted NAS volumes (and also with Finder copies). The underlying problem appears to be a memory leak in the macOS kernel or one of the kernel extensions. Specifically, the "kext.kalloc.32768" memory zone is expanded until it can no longer be expanded ("zone_map_exhaustion" occurs), at which point the memoryd system process starts to terminate idle processes. This problem is limited to Apple Silicon Macs and SMB volumes.

We reported this issue to Apple in January 2022 (FB9857268). Apple indicated that they had made significant progress on this issue in the 12.3 update. We're still able to reproduce high memory pressure, however we're no longer seeing the complete memory zone exhaustion that was leading to kernel panics. Likewise, we haven't received any additional reports of this issue from any 12.3 users.

Workaround: We have confirmed that using AFP rather than SMB consistently avoids these behaviors (in cases where using AFP is an option):

  1. Eject the NAS volume if it's currently mounted
  2. Open CCC and select the applicable backup task
  3. Click on the Source or Destination selector (whichever is applicable for your particular task)
  4. Hold down the Option key and choose "Switch to AFP" (provide the credentials for the NAS volume again if prompted)
  5. Save and run the task
While we recommend using AFP whenever it is an available option, it's important to note that AFP is a deprecated protocol and that some NAS vendors have started to drop support for it (e.g. Western Digital MyCloud(link is external)). If you are not happy with the performance and reliability of Apple's SMB filesystem client on the latest version of maCOS, please share that feedback with Apple(link is external), and please feel free to include our FB9857268 bug report number in that feedback.
