So I'm in the process of upgrading my systems to Monterey from High Sierra and use Mac Mail as my primary mail client. My primary view is a list of email above a preview pane of the message that is selected. On High Sierra, it look like this:

But on Monterey it looks like this:

taking up much more room for the list of emails since each one takes two lines, even though there is ample space there to show me the info that I need to look at (on the Monterey one I've expanded the list by shrinking the preview pane)

Try as I might I've been unable to find a way to set things up the way they used to work, that is one line per message with all of the relevant info on it with a preview pane below of the item that is selected. Am I missing something and it's there somewhere, or am I stuck with an "inferior" user experience?

thank you!

I guess I didn't think that those words meant what I was looking for.

Mail --> preferences --> viewing --> "use classic layout"

Does this help at all?

I don't have that selection ("use classic layout"

but column view did the trick
