I have a microphone I like a lot, but it gets very low levels on my Mac via Line In (even when the input volume is turned up all the way). Is there some kind of audio input driver I could download to add more gain OS X allows (rather than the obvious hardware amp or something)?

Is the microphone powered by battery or is it powered via XLR (phantom power: 12V to 48V)?

If it is the latter, more gain will not really help, as the oscillations are still quite small to get a nose-free signal out of it even with some kind of software gain.
