more external hard drive issues

okay, so i made a few copies of some movies and stored them on my external seagate drive. when i play them diretly from my drive using vlc the movie will freeze up every 5 minutes or so.
if i copy the file back to the mac (core2duo) it plays just fine.
has this happened to anyone before?
