on the back of my white iphone 3gs i have a scratch deep enough to feel when running across it with a fingernail. This isn't like the light scratching that will buff out with some plastic polish. Is there any remedy for this...some type of compound that could "fill in" this scratch. I don't think any amount of sanding could fix it, without messing with the integrity of the back of the unit.

At this point I would just live with it and use a case from now on. Sure you could probably repair it by sanding it down but then you will end up having to do the entire back of the iPhone, which if of course means you will lose the Apple logo. You would probably be better just buying a replacement back cover.
