Hi everyone.

Anyone else noticing that the iPhone XR screen is more susceptible to scratches than previous phones?

I have owned every version of the iPhone since 2007. Always used them with no case and no screen protector. Never once scratched the screen.

iPhone XR screen now has two very deep scratches within three months of ownership. No drops and no diamonds in my pockets.

Just wondered what others experiences have been?

Apologize, how could it be 3 months of ownership given it was sold just since October 27th ? Are you sure you refer to XR ? Or do you mean 3 weeks ?

You know, every forum (phone) that I read I see the same thing every time a new phone is released (doesn’t matter who makes it, Apple, Samsung, LG, etc) does this new phones screen scratch easier than the previous model.
Answer is, no. The glass is the same hardness.

Agreed, posts like this happen every time a phone is introduced. Many start with “screen scratched in only two days”.

I’ve had an XR since launch day. My wife also has one. I don’t like screen protectors and haven’t used one. I also work outside so more likely than most to get grit on my screen.

Absolutely no issues with screen scratches on our two phones. Not even micro-scratches. This isn’t surprising as the screen is glass and as such has the same hardness/scratch resistance as all other glass screen phones.

I don’t see any reason not to use a screen protector anymore. They are so thin they don’t make any difference in feel or responsiveness. It at least makes the phone look the same, especially if you get a full screen cover (does not affect Face ID) and you have peace of mind.

It’s a personal thing. I just don’t like them. I’ve had iPhones since the iPhone 4. Never had an issue with scratches. For me they are a waste of money.

Agreed that it is a personal
Thing. However I used my iPhone X previously without one, just a case, and it got so many light scratches. It almost ruined the excitement for me because whenever I looked at the screen, especially in direct sunlight, the scratches would stick out like a swollen thumb.

Had one on my iPhone XS Max since day one, and this particular screen protector is a LOT more resistant to scratches than the gorilla glass used on the iPhones. I do enjoy that peace of mind, as it makes me feel comfortable getting my phone out wherever I am.

I eventually get micro scratches but in reality I don’t notice them. Sure, if I go into a dark room and shine a torch at the screen I can see them. But that seems a rather sad activity and personally I have better things to do :)

For me screen protectors ruin the look and use of the phone. I always sell my old phones. Never had an issue with price or complaints from buyers.

More recent versions of gorilla glass have traded being slightly less scratch resistant for more shatter proof, so it's not just the XR, not even just on iPhones, it's a trend across the industry that a lot of phone reviews have picked up on.

I’ve been using my iPhone X for a year without a case or screen protector because I like how the phone feels and I don’t like the edges showing on the screen protectors. No scratches.

However, I do use a wallet pouch that I slide my phone into when I put it in my pocket. The wallet pouch has room for my ID and 3 or 4 credit cards, so it’s really convenient. I keep it in my front pocket, and I don’t miss sitting on my wallet at all.

It’s the Oleophobic coating that scratches, which scratches can actually fade as the Oleophobic coating wears off. If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, the scratch is deep enough where it’s permanent in the display.
