Digitizing football games from VHS tapes to .mp4 files. Seeking editing software to delete commercials, halftime and scoreboard shows, etc., that will then simply save the file, when edits are completed, in its original quality and Mbps. iMovie requires selections for Quality (low, medium, high, best or custom) when exporting the file. Selection of Custom requires determining Mbps with slider. Final file size seems to always be larger than the original pared down file no matter what Quality selection is made. Have minimal experience with iMovie, so perhaps it can do what I'm asking. If not, is there a simple editing software to just cut and save video files? Thanks for your advice.

iMovie works really well, and there are lots of tutorials. If you're unhappy with the final file size, consider Handbrake in post-processing.

Thanks for suggesting Handbrake. However, that adds another step. Still hoping that someone knows of a quick "cut and save" video editor. Thanks again for your response.

Have another look at your settings. I have a 104mb AVCHD 720p video file. If I import it into iMovie and then Share/Export it, I get the following:
Resolution: 720, Compress: Faster
Low Quality: 31mb
Medium Quality: 60.5mb
High Quality: 89mb
Pro Res: 464
Custom:119mb using the highest mbps of 16.
