Most stable fw for an iPhone 3G?

I bought a good condition 8GB 3G iPhone from my cousin for my son. He needs it jailbroken/unlocked to use it. The phone has 3.1.2 now.

I plan on using jailbrake me and ultrasn0w to jailbrake, so the question is what is most stable fw for a 3G iPhone?

Upgrade to 4.1, that's the only stable unlagg 4.XX firmware for the 3G, and just wait for a jailbreak

Is it true that 4.1 is just as fast as 3.x? I know they promised speed fixes for the 3G with 4.1...would you say its comparable to 3.1.3 when spotlight is disabled, for instance?
