Resolved Mount a disk image instead of inserting a game disk….is it possible?

I have been playing around with my G4 PB and was trying to get NeverWinter Nights to work without the disk 2 inserted.
I have legit version, but as it’s an old Mac and don’t want to task the DVD drive with constant reads.

I installed the game from Disk 1, followed by Disk 2, which is also the play disk, which the manual says needs to stay in.


I created a disk image of Disk 2 as a master DVD version.
At some point a while ago I got it to work (maybe in Tiger) when the game asked for Disk 2, I mounted the dmg, and it worked, but then stopped working after shutting down and restarting.

Wondering if there is a method to get the disk (copied as a dmg) to work when asked for Disk 2 to be inserted?

The DMG will need to be re-mounted after each reboot. You can add the DMG to your login items so that it automatically mounts after each reboot.

The problem is, even when it’s mounted, when the insert disk banner appears it still waits for a disk.
I don’t know of a way to redirect to the dmg.

I presume the game is doing some check to see if it's from an actual CD drive and not a virtual disk. There's probably some way of hacking OS X to fool the game into thinking it's a real disc, but I personally would check MacintoshGarden to see if they have this game and know of a way around the check.

The tool that does this perfectly on my Windows boxes is DaemonTools.

I see they have a free Mac version, but sadly not for ppc:

I recall that I used Roxio Toast to mount my disc images on powerpc, and the system would see those as CDs. For my 68K Macs, I used Astarte Toast, it’s precursor.

I think I may just get it from the App Store on my iPad, rather than faffin around..…
Nice thing with the boxed version though, at least I have the 200 page game guide I can refer to.

Yay it looks great, and works on iPad also.
